Horizons Giving Day: helping low income k-12 students in Savannah

Horizons Savannah is seeking the support of the Savannah community for Horizons Giving Day on Wednesday, May 16. This one-day event is a national day of giving with the goal of raising more than one million dollars to bring Horizons to more communities and families nationwide. Horizons Savannah’s goal of $50,000 will help close the opportunity gap for low-income Kindergarten through 12th-grade students in Chatham County and the greater Savannah area.

“Horizons students build relationships with teachers and peers that make real and lasting differences in their self-confidence and the ability to reach their goals,” said Christy Edwards, Executive Director of Horizons Savannah. “The program depends on the support of the community volunteers and donations.”

The Horizons Savannah program includes six weeks of academics, project-based learning and swimming lessons each summer through partnerships with independent schools, colleges, and universities. Horizons Savannah serves over 200 students each summer at Savannah Country Day School, Bethesda Academy and St. Andrew’s School. This summer, the program will be expanding to the campus of Savannah Christian Preparatory School.

Horizons students typically gain 8-12 weeks of reading and math skills each summer. 97 percent of Horizons high school students graduate on time, and 91 percent go on to attend college.

Donations received on Giving Day are tax deductible and will directly benefit the Savannah community program.
