The American Red Cross urges all type O negative donors to donate blood within the next few days as its supply of this much-needed blood type currently stands at less than a day’s supply. Type O negative is the universal blood type and can be safely given to any patient, regardless of blood type. The American Red Cross will open its Savannah donor center two Sundays per month for platelet donations. Platelets are the component in blood that enables it to clot. Patients with illnesses that include cancer, leukemia and blood diseases frequently need platelet transfusions. A small child with leukemia can require as many as 30 to 40 units of platelets per week during a hospital stay.1:00 pm until 5:00 pm for platelet and whole blood donations. Appointments are needed for platelet donations and can be made by calling (912) 961-5765. Most healthy people age 17 and older, who weigh at least 110 pounds, are eligible to donate blood and platelets. The Red Cross Donor Center is open: Monday-Thursday 11-7 Friday 8-3 Saturday 8-2
On August 8, 2008, we are having a blood drive at Candler Hospital in the Marsh Auditorium from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Candler Hospital is located at 5353 Reynolds Street, Savannah, Georgia. The American Red Cross in the Southeastern United States is on appeal. The blood supply is very, very low and with summer here there will be more people vacationing in the area which means more traffic accidents and the need for more blood. Food will be provided at the blood drive together with door prizes.
